Gauteng provincial government has issued a statement following reports that engineering and mining contractor; Murray & Roberts has bought 50% of Bombela Concession Company (BCC), which owns the Gautrain rapid transit railway system.
Speaking in his capacity as Gauteng MEC for Transport and Roads, Dr Ismail Vadi said the Gauteng Province was not made aware of any sale between Murray & Roberts and BCC.
“The Gauteng Provincial Government has not received a formal notice of any change in shareholding in BCC. The Province has thus not had an opportunity to review the transaction as it is entitled to under the Concession Agreement.
MEC Vadi went on to say that, should such an agreement exist, provincial government’s approval of the change in shareholding may be required.
The MEC added that the press release the Gauteng Province sent out regarding the sale, would serve to confirm that ownership of the entire Gautrain System is vested in the Gautrain Management Agency, a Gauteng Provincial Public Entity, and any media reports based on the Murray and Roberts announcement about the sale were premature.
