Taxi drivers block major Pretoria intersections over fines

Gauteng taxis operating in the Pretoria area took to the streets as early as 3am this morning to hand over a memorandum to the city’s mayor Solly Msimanga.

Taxi drivers, from Mamelodi participated in a 20km per hour “go-slow” that would start at Denneboom Taxis Rank and end at Tshwane House from 3am to about 11 am.

The taxi industry said in a statement they’re “concerned with the enforcement tickets that have blocked their professional driving permit (PrDP driver’s licenses) and motor disc.

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) fines prohibited them from renewing their licences and car discs. This has been causing a hindrance to their daily operations and progress in the taxi industry, the operators said.

The taxi drivers claim that Johannesburg and Durban taxi’s license suspensions have been lifted, and claim it unfair that the same has not been done for Pretoria.

“We have decided to make a go-slow from Mamelodi blocking the road at 20km/h until we reach the mayor at the Tshwane House. This needs your help to make a big impact,” they said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Please let us support each other because we [Pretoria taxi industry] are the only ones left. Joburg, they cancelled all tickets and also Durban. What about us? Lets fight this,” the statement continued.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) warned that the Taxi industry made no application nor was granted approval for the protest, and it would be regarded as an illegal activity.
