At least 54 people were arrested for alleged drunk driving and three more for falsified documents during law enforcement operations which saw much fruit in in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District from Friday, 28 July, to Sunday, 30 July.
The intensified multidisciplinary law-enforcement operations by the Northern Cape Provincial Traffic Police, the National Traffic Police and the South African Police Service reportedly stopped more than 3 100 vehicles during the operations.
According to Keitumetse Moticoe of the Department of Transport and Safety, 648 drivers were tested for drunken driving, resulting in 54 arrests made and three more drivers arrested for falsified documentations.
Altogether 18 vehicles were declared unroadworthy while 382 summons were issued for various other offences such as driver and vehicle fitness.
In one bloodcurdling case in Kuruman, a father was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol with his small child in the car with him at around 1 am in Kuruman, which is a 60km stretch from where he resides in Kathu Traffic officials safely escorted the child home to Kathu.
“We appeal to all road users, especiallyparents to take care of the safety of their children by buckling them up or putting them in child restraints appropriate for their ages. We request all road users to exercise caution and patience on the roads for their safety, the safety of passengers and all other road users and not to drive under the influence of alcohol,” Moticoe said.
Operations throughout the province will be ongoing to ensure the safety of all road users.
Visibility of pedestrians and drivers is therefore urged on, continuous usage of vehicle lights caution for wild animals on the roads.
